The file is a downloadable, fillable, PDF document that automatically calculates elapsed times and totals.
The fillable PDF requires Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat 7.0 or later to use. Either of the modern Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Adobe Acrobat Pro DC will work very well.
The file is 2MB as downloaded, but it will become bigger as you add data.
To use:
Open the document. Type in your data as desired in the highlighted form-field boxes that you see on most of the pages of the book.
In Part 1, which is a section about your aircraft and equipment, you can enter data that describe your machines and your organization (e.g. drone ownership, location, insurance, etc.).
Part 2 is the main section of the book and is where you record your flight data. Explanations and examples that show what data can be entered are provided on pages 24-27. Be sure to enter the units (e.g. feet, meters) that you will be using in the book on page 25.
Using the document correctly, you can keep track of your totals for each of the types of drones you may fly as well as the grand total of all of your drone flying.
The document is smart.
It will automatically calculate elapsed time and page totals for you. To do this:
- Type your takeoff time and landing time in the appropriate form-field boxes on a given flight data page (you must type the time using HH:MM format – don’t neglect the colon symbol).
- Then select “tab” or click in any other box, and the elapsed time for your flight will be automatically calculated and will appear in the column marked “Total,” also in HH:MM format (note that you cannot type values into the “Total” column). Remove individual Total column values by deleting the associated takeoff and landing times.
- To further define your flight time as “Rotary,” “Fixed Wing,” “LTA” (Lighter Than Air), OIC/Solo, Training Received, Instructor or Night, type your calculated elapsed time value (as displayed in the Total column) into these columns (see example, page 26 of your book); note that these columns do not automatically load up since the book cannot know what sort of aircraft you will be using, nor in what role you will be flying. The document will, however, automatically calculate and display totals for every column at the bottom of the page.
- Note that, as a check that you have entered everything correctly, the sum of the “Totals this page” values for Fixed Wing plus Rotary plus LTA must equal the “Totals this page” value of the Total column.
But wait - there's more!
A particularly helpful feature of the book is that the “Totals to date” values, at the very bottom of the page, are automatically sent to the page that follows, as “Totals brought forward,” which are then added to that page’s “Totals this page” to form the new and updated “Totals to date” at the very bottom of that page. In this way your overall totals for all columns are updated at the end of each page, throughout the book.
You cannot type values into the “Totals brought forward” form-field boxes, except on the first data page (page 28). On page 28 you can type data into the “Totals brought forward” boxes so that you can begin this book with totals from an earlier logbook, if you wish. If you are starting to record data from scratch, however, you can just leave the first page “Totals brought forward” boxes blank and the document will calculate as if they were zeros.
You can type in a signature in the “I certify…” box in the lower left corner of the data pages.
In Part 3 you can enter information about your training and any examinations done or qualifications obtained.
